THE IMMORTAL

The “Summer of Cirque” kicked off in DC with the premiere of Michael Jackson the Immortal World Tour at the Verizon Center.  Lifelong fans of MJ and Cirque du Soleil enthusiasts were taken on an extraordinary journey through the eyes of the King of Pop, celebrating a legacy that continues to transcend generations.  Creator Jamie King managed to present an explosive fusion of fantasy, high flying acrobatics, dance, polytechnics and of course the music of the most prolific artists of our generation.

The nearly sold out audience of more than 10,000 was taken on a roller coaster of emotions as they were dazzled by unforgettable performances and live music of the Cirque du Soleil cast.

Michael Jackson was a fan of Cirque du Soleil and was in attendance at the very first Cirque performance in Los Angeles more than 25 years ago.  There had been talks of collaboration for years and the presentation of The Immortal World Tour is a genuine manisfestation of the creativity of The King of Pop and Cirque du Soleil.

Several members of The Immortal World Tour cast worked and traveled with Michael.  Bass player, Don Boyette and singer Fred White talked about how amazing it is to be able to relive Michael through this performance, though it all can be emotional for them at times.  Boyette mentioned that playing “Man In The Mirror” is always an emotional point in the show, as he remembers how special the song was to Michael and how he loved to close his shows with it.  When asked if Michael would approve of Cirque du Soleil’s production, Boyette said “oh Michael would LOVE this!  I’m sure he is somewhere taking a bow with us each night.”

For me, the show was truly special as my life could be set to a Michael Jackson soundtrack.   I danced, laughed, cried and remembered moments throughout my life that were underscored by Michael’s music.  People stood to their feet and sang along throughout the performance and shouts of “We Love You Michael” rang through the arena.   I was in awe of the body of work and the unmistakeable legacy that Michael left behind.  His global messages of love, peace and unity and his music are truly IMMORTAL!
